a story that must be told

born and raised in oxford, england, in one of the city's many suburban ghettos, was a little hermit boy who would eventually grow into a fierce collector of hip hop classics. saving the pennies from two paper-rounds, the vinyl started to pile up and the boy decided to take it to the next level and purchase a gramophone turntable.

it then seemed right somehow to obtain a second wheel, and numerous 12" singles were tested for their durability on a couple of felt slipmats. now for most, music can be an outlet or a comfort that can reciprocate any mood and, growing up at the time, very much a product of his environment, walter found solace in 'gangster rap'.

for the hermit boy it was all about the street, if an album didn't feature a 'parental advisory' sticker it wasn't worth the time of play, and there were many such discs so things were pretty nice for a while. the boy, whose friends were small (in number), actually got quite good, and started to dj - mostly in his bedroom to himself and occasionally to his best mate paul - but something was about to happen that would, in time, change his life.

hip hop - his favourite form of music and way of life, his source of light, his buddy to whom he had devoted his adolescence - was transforming, and not for the better, it ridiculously started to resemble one of those scandalous, but colourful, glossy gossip magazines. peeps recording in the booth were talking about whose necklace is the biggest and sparkles the most, who gets to date the 'model chicks' and who has the most cars parked up in front of mum's house.

as this metamorphose was taking place, so the troubled boy continued to grow, until eventually he had heard enough. he was struggling to find albums he could relate to. whether you agree with him or not, he decided to make some beats that he felt the industry needed, and walter pico was born.

this ep is a concept piece in the run-up to walter's forthcoming full-length lp on the reasons why he felt it necessary to make the thing in the first place. my alter ego serves as a little taster, and it's all walter - from the keyboard playing to the questionable 'wiggy wiggy' scratches, there's a mix of humourous and serious content and walter reckons that there's something here for almost everyone. if you're not keen on the vocals (and this is possible) then just bob your head to the instrumentals and marvel at the incredible sleeve artwork.

"it's cheap, but i worked hard on it. i hope you like it" - walter pico
"i can't believe what just came out of your mouth" - the next big thing, oxford
"irrepressible hip hop beats... one to watch" - the times
